This project marked an exciting milestone for ModnPods — the delivery of our first multi-rise modular accommodation solution, designed specifically for staff housing in the remote communities of Coen and Croydon in Far North Queensland.
Built to withstand the region’s harsh conditions — including extreme heat, humidity, and cyclone activity — the pods were engineered using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and designed for long-term durability and comfort.
The Croydon homes featured a 147m² three-bedroom layout, high-set with a garage at ground level and living quarters elevated on the second floor to enhance ventilation and protect from flooding. The Coen project utilised the same mirrored three-bedroom floor plan — but positioned entirely at ground level, with no veranda to Bedroom 2, resulting in a total floor area of 120 m²<. In addition, Coen also included a two-bedroom layout option measuring 101 m². These variations showcase the flexibility of a modular design, allowing the same core layouts to be adapted seamlessly to different site conditions, footprints, and accommodation needs.
These dwellings feature three or two bedrooms, two bathrooms, laundry, and a generous open-plan kitchen and living area with a raked ceiling and integrated deck — creating a strong sense of openness, privacy, and connection to the surrounding environment. The design was guided by the General Employment Housing Design Standards and Guidelines, ensuring suitability for staff accommodation in remote areas. Thoughtful spatial planning maximises storage throughout, while high-quality finishes contribute to a home that is both highly functional and built to endure.
This project highlights ModnPods’ ability to deliver complex modular solutions in remote areas — tailored to the needs of government agencies, and built to perform in some of Australia’s most demanding environments.
